older groups
There's lots to discuss about bicycling in the Hudson Valley. No
one website can keep up with all that people are doing and thinking, and
things that are happening with roads and paths and bridges. So we
encourage you to visit the discussion groups, see what's there, and add
your own experiences and ideas.

bikeMH = Bike Mid-Hudson
Discussion of road and bridge
conditions, routes, trip reports, events, issues in the Mid-Hudson
area. Area includes Dutchess, Ulster, Columbia, Greene,
Putnam and northern Orange counties -- roughly from the Bear
Mountain Bridge up to around the Rip Van Winkle Bridge and
Kinderhook.
You can read or post messages through either Email or Web
access. To view recent messages on the Web, visit

Posting or sending a message to bikeMH
-
You must first join this group in order to "post" or publish or
send a message to this group (but you do not need to join if you want only
to read the messages).
-
This group is a Yahoo! Group. So you must also join Yahoo! and get a
Yahoo! ID identifier.
-
If you post to this group, your full Email address will be exposed to
other members of the group. Also a part of your Email address will
be exposed on the Yahoo! Groups web pages to the general public. To reduce
the risk of getting one of their main Email addresses exposed to unwanted
"spam" messages, some members of the group set up a separate Email address
for use with discussion groups -- but other Yahoo! members think the risk
of getting unwanted "spam" Email messages in this way is not large enough
to worry about.
-
Read and check carefully the Yahoo! Privacy statements and your own
Yahoo! personal Profile, and modify information in your Profile in order
to safeguard your needs for privacy. We suggest keeping at least your
Email address private. Some people have a separate personal Profile for
use in Yahoo! groups with different information and privacy settings than
their other Profiles.
-
Read and check carefully your Marketing Preferences and other settings
for your Yahoo! account and identifier. (as of March 2004) the initial
default is to be agreeing to receive many different kinds of marketing
offers and information messages from Yahoo! and its partners. If you do
not wish to receive some or all of those kinds of offers or messages, we
suggest modifying your preference settings and un-checking the kinds that
you do wish to receive.
-
All posts and messages and uses of the bikeMH group must follow the
Yahoo! Terms of Service and
bikeMH
Terms of Use and other bikeMH guidelines.
Discussion of routes, road and path conditions, trip reports,
events, issues in the New York City area. Area includes the five boroughs of New York City, the
discussion often includes Westchester county and parts of Rockland
County and New Jersey near the George Washington Bridge -- and
sometimes places further north, like the Bear Mt Bridge, West Point,
and Storm King Mt Highway.
It is a Usenet newsgroup (internet address =
news:nyc.bicycles) -- which you can try to access through "News" or
"Newsgroups" in your Email software or Web browser, or you can try typing
the address news:nyc.bicycles into the
Address line of your Web browser.

Usually you can "post" or publish or send a message to this group by
the same computer software or Web access method which you use to read the
newsgroup -- see above.
-
When you post to this group, the full Email address you give will be
exposed the general public. This is true of all Usenet newsgroups, not
just this one.
-
To reduce the risk of getting one of their main Email addresses
exposed to unwanted "spam" messages, many users of this group give a
"mangled" "non-real" Email address when they post or send a message to
this group, or they at least set up a separate Email address for Usenet
newsgroups. (as of March 2004) We think the risk of starting to get lots of unwanted "spam"
Email messages from exposing your main Email address on Usenet is large, so we definitely recommend using a separate Email
address, or giving a "mangled" "non-real" Email address.
-
To set up a separate Email address from your main address, follow the
procedures given by your Email service or Internet Service Provider.
Several Email services (e.g. Yahoo! and Hotmail) provide free accounts, so
that's a way that many people use to get a new Email address separate from
the main address supplied by their Internet Service Provider.
-
To give a "mangled" "non-real" Email address, follow the instructions
in the software or Web access method which you use to post messages to
newsgroups. It might not be possible to use a non-real address with your current
Newsgroup method, or it might
not be easy to find out how to do it.
Outlook Express -- (as of March 2004) In Microsoft
Outlook Express (the Email program which usually comes included with the
Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser), in the Folders window find the
folder for your Newsgroups account (this folder is the "parent" that
contains the nyc.bicycles group and other Usenet newsgroups you are
subscribed to). Right-click on this Newsgroups account folder and select
Properties. On the General tab, under User Information, find E-mail
address. Then add or delete or change some characters in that Email
address, so it is no longer your real Email address (but not somebody
else's either) -- for examples of "mangled" Email addresses, read other
previous posts on this newsgroup. Then click on OK. (This all assumes that
you already have set up a Newsgroup account in Outlook Express --
instructions for this are in the Help for Outlook Express, search for
"newsgroup" -- which further assumes that your Internet Service Provider
offers access to a Usenet newsgroup server).
