section of
NYC to Albany one-way route

  • Where:  From the Bear Mountain Bridge to the Newburgh-Beacon (also known as "Hamilton Fish") Bridge -- on the west side of the Hudson river.

  • 19 miles, moderate to hilly.

This one-way route along the west side of the Hudson River is derived from a Loop route that goes on both sides of the river.  For more information and reports, check the Bear Mountain Bridge- Newburgh-Beacon Bridge Loop - [ Map ]

  • Highlights:   the U. S. Army military academy at West Point, with its cadets and buildings and great views over the Hudson.  The curves and hills of the old Storm King highway and the high view across to Breackneck Ridge.  The beach at Cornwall-on-Hudson and the cruise by the river industries of Newburgh.

  • Characteristics:  Some sections of high-speed road through Fort Montgomery and Cornwall.  Some significant hills, but nothing really big.

Warning:  There are major restrictions on travel in and through the United States Military Academy at West Point (as of July 2009).  This might require a major alteration of this route -- see Variations D + F.  See also Condition Reports under "Orange County" and Trip Reports for more details and for ideas on alternate routes.  Before trying this route, check if bicycle travel is permitted from the Thayer gate entrance through the West Point campus to the Washington gate exit.

  • Maps:  You should have a detailed road map of Orange county to do this route (see Road Maps).
